How to Choose Your Drum
There are three main factors to choosing the right drum for you – Style, Sound, Size.
Style – We seek out drums that have a certain aesthetic appeal to them. Our drums tend to be exquisitely carved and hand made. They can be enjoyed as works of art and as reflections of your personal taste.
Sound – The real test for any drum is what it sounds like when it’s played. Our Djembes are hollowed out from a single piece of wood and the heads are all natural goatskin. There’s a warmth there that no synthetic head can duplicate. Typically, the larger the drum the deeper the bass notes (that distinctive Boom sound) will be. Our 24, 26 and 28 inch tall drums will deliver thunderous bass tones, balanced with a full range of middle tones and high, echoing slap sounds. The 16 to 20 inch tall drums have a fabulously rich sound too and have proven to be the most popular all round drums we have. They feature great bass, middle and high tones. The smaller drums offer much more subtle and quiet tones. There’s not much bass there but the mid and high tones are still great. These drums are terrific for small circles and trance-leading.
Size - Most of the drums we feature are available in a variety of sizes. Here’s a good rule of thumb to follow: If you are sitting in a chair with the drum resting on the ground, tilted slightly away from you, the head should be about 2 to 3 inches above your knees. If you drum standing up, using a drum harness, weight becomes more important than size. For sheer convenience, ease of use and fun without sacrificing sound quality, our 16 inch drums are terrific. They are perfect for drum circles, tossing on the back seat and having on hand when the mood strikes to drum! The non-scientific guide below is based upon some good averages and our personal experience sizing drums. As a friend of ours often says “Your mileage may vary!”
If you are between 5 feet to 5 feet 7 inches...Our 20 inch drums are perfect size and weight.
If you are between 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 10 inches...Our 23, 24, and 26 inch drums are just right.
If you are taller than 5 feet 10 inches...Our 24, 26, and 28 inch drums should be excellent.
